Marvel’s Spider-man Miles Morales Review
Welcome to our review of Spider-man Miles Morales which Kuma played on the PS5. Below you can check out my video review and keep reading afterward for a further recap of the game.
A new neighborhood Spider-man
Some spoilers can’t be helped since the first portion of the game was a recap of the previous. At the end of Marvel’s Spider-man, Miles Morales revealed to Peter Parker that he has spider-powers which begin his journey to being a hero. However, as we transition to the new game, you start to notice that the people of NYC. They are not too keen on a new spider-man just yet. It will be your task to win the hearts of your neighborhood and the rest of Manhattan. Thanks to your buddy Ganke who has the Spider-man app which helps you take on the task for others.
Things take a crazy responsible turn as Peter and Mary Jane go on a business trip overseas. Talk about a cannon “Far from Home” situation. Either way, this is your time now to shine and show NYC your worth. Taking up the spider-oath and starting to believe in yourself is crucial in being your own hero. The question that some of us were wondering, what would Miles be facing? Kingpin is in prison, Rhino was the first encounter, but who else could shake up this heroes world? That I will keep to myself for the rest of the review.
Spider-man has been pretty good when it comes to an open-world experience and when Insomniac Games took over. It was like a, “you think that is good wait till you get a load of this.” kind of moment. This is the best version of NY that anyone can experience since it is full of life at every corner. You can hear the Cities personality in this game. With the people either praising you or haggling you since you are no “Their” spider-man. At least not yet that is. You still have the same interaction as the first game where you can walk around, greet the public, and of course the Spidey App. Once you swipe left on the touchpad you pull up the app and see what task you can perform to help the citizens. It is pretty cool and even tracks your crime progress.
When it comes to combat that has not changed much. Since OG Spidey taught you everything he knows you have the same fighting skills with minor adjustments. However, this is Miles Morales after all being that he has the Venom Strike and Stealth abilities. Even though I am playing on the hardest difficulty, I still have an advantage with the different combinations of venom strikes and then dropping into stealth to lose my enemies. It is a nice feature as well as the upgrades to his gadgets. You have robotic drones this time instead of spidey drones that shoot at enemies. Kind of giving you A.I. back up while you land combos. There is the gravity well to suck in enemies to one spot and that comes in handy when doing a Venom strike jump. Also your shock mines and your standard web-shooters.
The skills you obtain through the trails and which again are not that many. I got them done within an hour and thanks to the fast travel feature which has no loading times thanks to the PS5. Going through the city was done with ease.
There are only two major enemy factions this time around with Roxxon and The Underground. Roxxon group seems to have adopted the tech from Silver Sable and just painted it red. The Underground is a new growing crime syndicate that utilizes nanotechnology to form weaponry on the fly. Both will give you a run for your money and it is key to use all your abilities and combos to take them down. You still have your standard random hoodlums all over the map and of course your scavenger hunts. There will be other grinding collectibles, but they all are not as crazy as from the first game. Seems as though they are cut in half vs. what you had to deal with in Peter Parker’s run.
Insomniac Games put a lot of heart into Spider-man Miles Morales. There’s a nice attitude and tone to each area in Manhattan. Going around Spanish Harlem gives you a glimpse of the culture even with the bodegas and street fairs. Hitting down midtown has its own vibe and even all the way down to lower Manhattan. A tourist dream especially during this time when we can go outside. It also has a perfect time frame of being that it is the holiday season with NY blanketed in snow and it is beautiful. Being that I am a Native Brooklyn Knight, showing how Christmas is done in the season was a nice touch. You get a ten out of ten for that.
The soundtrack is bumping to the max. If you want to take a listen it is on Spotify with a nice track from Jaden Smith himself. Not bad at all and when it comes to the costumes I want to meet the fashion artist for them. They are way better than the first game and each one has its own personal animation even with the cut-scenes. Before the costumes didn’t show their own battle damage in-game and in cut-scenes, but that attention to detail shines now especially on the PS5. Even the lighting work was handled with care and I have to appreciate the reflective surface on one of his costumes.
Utilizing photo mode in Spider-man Miles Morales is always fun and this time there are holiday-themed frames to put pictures in. So get creative and send friends seasons greetings from the web crawler. If you are into that sort of thing.
As much fun as I had it still bugs me that this game was pretty short. Anyone can beat it within 8 to 10 hours even with all the side quest. I can’t even say it was half the size of the first Spider-man game maybe just a light small version. As I said in the video if you were to compare the two, the first game was more like a weekday while Miles Morales felt like a fun quick weekend. Hoping for a sequel that is a bit lengthier.
Marvel’s Spider-man Miles Morales definitely deserves a BUY rating and the best part is that it is a cross-buy for those that do not have a PS5 yet. Do not worry, you will get upgraded, but keep in mind I bought the PS5 version and it gave me the PS4 version as well. It was enough to enjoy myself and just swinging around the city is enjoyable on its own. I am hoping for the next game we get a co-op feature or DLC that features Spider-Gwen or Silk.
