Beastly Review: Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1+2
This has been a long time coming for a proper Tony Hawk game to be released. Yes I know, Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1+2 is just a remake of the original with some upgrades. Now, Debo and I did a co-op review for the multiplayer portion which you can watch here. However, I definitely need to go in-depth on the single-player games.
Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1 and 2 Breakdown:
The anticipation was real when it came to the announcement of THPS 1 plus 2 and here is the truth. A pro I am not at the game and even though it is not a simulator like other skateboard games. It has its own level of difficulty for an arcade sports game. Now, being that I am not a pro they put in some features to help you just have a fun experience.
Don’t worry about no storyline, your goal is to finish each map with a 100% clear rate to unlock other levels. Honestly, you do not have to get 100% to unlock levels, just enough scoring, but you will want to. If you do get 100% in clearing everything you are rewarded with mini and giant skater mode from Tony Hawk 1.
Also, there is an extra incentive to go back to the levels and hunt for Alien plushies that are hidden through each map. One to be exact on each level.
Either you are new to the series or a veteran, Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1+2 can be played by anyone. Take me for example if you are having too many bails or can’t balance properly on rails. You can go into options and add mods to help you perform tricks and combos easier. Now after a while, if you feel comfortable, you can take them off and skate with your own skills.
Customize to make your character your own. Even though it is limited which is a major downside from the previous title. You could change your character’s size, weight, and form. This is just simple clothing, gender, skin tone, hair, and tattoos. I am a big guy so I expect more of a variety. But once that is done going as deep as picking where you live you can dive into more customizations.
Trick out your board, stats, and of course special trick moves. We played on the PS4 so when it comes to flip tricks you use Square and a direction. Grabs are O and a direction and for grinds, you use Triangle in any direction. In all this, you build up your special meter which grants you a boost in air time and speed. Once your special is available you can execute special moves. Down and Right plus O lets you execute the famous 900 tricks.
Customize your moves the way you wish and you unlock more trick slots when you upgrade. Trust, setting up your stats properly will help you in the long run. You can adjust them at any time and have your stats fit your needs for whatever obstacle.
It Looks Good!
With the latest upgrades to Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1+2, this is one magnificent looking game. Even with all the venues, you get to visit and I have to admit it is easier to see and get to secret areas with the latest details.
The best part is the developers made sure to make a deal that all the music’s copyright is handled so we can stream and share content without an issue. Other developers, hell all of the developers need to utilize this practice because us content creators always have this issue. Either way has to mute the game music or change it to something copyright free ourselves. So, a great job of doing that. We get all the classics and some new ones as well as skaters.
An interesting feature is they aged some of the great skaters for the present day. Another thing you can do is create your own skate park. The in-game currency is amazing because as you progress you earn money for gear and items for the skate park. This way you upload it to other users to try out your parks. So, get creative and have fun.
As stated the customization is limited with no room to actually make a husky skater or a deformed one. I do remember the fun in making some interesting and goofy characters. Another feature that would have been nice is the feature to jump off the board and run. That was in Tony Hawk Underground to dismount your board. It would have been nice.
Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1 plus 2 in the words of Debo is an ABSOLUTE BUY! Pick it up now on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Windows PC. There are a few secrets to obtain for other characters like Jack Black as Officer Dick, an Alien, and Ripper. Sadly the other characters like Spider-man, Iron Man, Jango Fett, and Solid Snake will not be there. It sucks, but understandable. You will have two choices of regular for $39.99 or deluxe for $49.99.
