Beastly Review of Call of Duty: Warzone
Everyone seems to be getting into the Battle Royale scene lately. Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 had Black Out, but Infinity Ward wanted in on this action. So we gamers have Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Warzone mode which is the Free-er to play BR mode. What makes it stand out from the rest?
Welcome to the Warzone:
The Call of Duty: Warzone Free-er to Play game lives up to the name. There are two modes to choose from with Battle Royale and Plunder. The BR Warzone mode features you and two other players teaming up to take on other players. It is in your interest to stay in the safe zone while gathering the best gear possible. Yes, it sounds just like every other Battle Royale game, but it has its own COD recipe.
This beast was never a fan of the Battle Royale concept because of the horrible drops when entering the world. It always seems that you will always have bad luck when dropping in a zone. In this version, it seems the drops that you find in different areas make it a fair game. This is a huge map that will feature 150 players and you get a lovely practice mode which is always good.
Giving players an opportunity to get an understanding of a game by dropping them into a bot match is key. The next thing that is exciting is your literal get out of Jail Free Card. If you can win that is. Your first death you get a chance to fight for a respawn in the Gulag. This is a one vs. one fight that will send you back into the game if you win. I think that is awesome and so far I have 10 wins 2 losses in the one vs one. However, your other chance is if your teammates can revive you through the in-game funds.
Once you find the shop you will need $4500 to revive a teammate. WAIT THERE IS MORE! The money you gain throughout the map can be used for self revive, armor, and kill stream perks. Also and this is my favorite, loadout drops to gain your personal loadout guns. This can get you a better edge in any fight if you can’t find what you want. There is no need for someone grabbing your tags when you down which I find amazing.
It doesn’t seem like the game is weapon-based, meaning the level of weapon will determine if you win or not. There have been games where I won because I cunning and of course dead silence is always good. You still have the kill animation from the base game. Even though this is a huge map and snipers have the biggest advantage you can still be smart. You will have your range of vehicles to use including helicopters.
You win you get airlifted off the map away from the poisonous gas. Then you do it all over again.
Plunder that Money!
This is self-explanatory where you and two other soldiers are in it for the money. This is a long campaign where you have infinite respawns and can use your base game loadout. There will be money to hunt for throughout the map and your task is to bank as much of it. The chase is on with in-game missions as well either going into a bounty hunter mode or scavenger.
In this mode, it kind of reminds me of being in the dark zone of The Division as you get to an extraction helicopter. Once there you will have to mind your surroundings as you try to unload the money you gathered. It is a long game that can reach almost 40 minutes in each match. If you have the right teammates to play with this can be a fun and successful run. But honestly, it has been fun running around just tackling opponents forgetting about the objective or just getting lost in the moment. As you collect the money you will become a target as high earner with your bag leaking money. You will become a target to everyone and should plan traps for pursuers. Also, keep your head at a swivel because even though you defeated your opponent they can parachute in right back in the same area.
Watch the skies and aim true to hopefully make them spawn in at a different and further direction. Now when it comes to this being like the Dark Zone in Division is when you have to summon a copter. Of course, this helicopter will alert everyone to your extraction so tactically survey the area and then hope for the best. There will be three of you so, triangle formation, extract and then back to your positions to protect or tackle others for their money.
You will have a money meter on the bottom of the screen and each time you die you will lose a percentage of your funds. Again there will be other missions in the game with bounty hunting and search missions. Always interesting.
The Semi Bad Side:
Not really that bad of a thing, but 3 players was a bit weird to me vs. a four soldier squad. Some feel it is perfect, but even four would have been great. The respawns are a bit weird, it should not be so close together because you just get killed faster after dropping in. It is always an issue of horrible respawns in FPS titles and only after a few respawns you will drop in a further area. The other downside is a minor annoyance that anyone can fix. The cross voice support through consoles. I am playing on the PC and some of my buddies are on console, but I could not hear them even though they could hear me. It was a bit of tweaking and opening ports to get it to work. Still was an annoying 20 minutes.
When it comes to free to play games this is pretty solid and truly a free-er to play game as they said. If you want some benefits you can obtain the battle pass which will cost you $20. The added bonus of not having the base game to play brings it to everyone as well as crossplay. If you don’t have the base game warzone will be an 83-101 download depending. It is a good thing there is cross-save because whatever loadouts I have on the PS4 is now on the PC version as well which is convenient. This is a good thing for gaming and saves time and I can’t wait for the crossplay to reach other titles. In that I give Call of Duty: Warzone a Download it rating!
